Talented Athletes Programme

TAP_2018_343px‌Sprinter Jill Cherry and badminton player Ciar Pringle have been named Glasgow Caledonian University's (GCU) Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.

They were presented with their awards at the annual Sports Ball, and thanked Paul Morron, former president of Glasgow Jewish Representative Council and donor of the award, when he visited the campus.

Ciar won gold in the men's badminton doubles with Matthew Duguid, and men’s singles bronze at the Scottish Universities championships earlier this year. The duo reached the quarter finals of the men's doubles at the British Universities Championships. Ciar is ranked sixth in singles and 11th in men’s doubles in Scotland.

He said: “It is an honour to win this award. The support I have had is amazing. It has helped me a lot this year, my first at university, with competitions and with keeping on top of my university work. It is amazing to win and an incredible opportunity.”

Jill is a member of the Great Britain U20 4 x 400m relay team and competed at the U20 European Championships in Italy last year. She won the Senior Scottish 600m Indoor Championship in January and the British U20 indoor 400m in February 2018.

She said: “I am really happy to have been selected from so many athletes at GCU to win the award. It is an honour. The support I have received has been really good, helping with travel to competitions, funding training and equipment, and helping me to perform to my best ability. It has been an amazing year.”
