Small steps can make big differences!

We are looking to hear from GCU students in their second year and upwards and early career researchers who want to make a positive difference in their communities and help those in need. This year we particularly welcome applications for projects which strive to make a change for the Common Good as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic e.g. helping communities which have been particularly affected, such as supporting vulnerable people/ groups.

The Magnusson Fund offers awards of up to £2,500, supported by donors including Sir Alex Ferguson CBE and Santander Universities. Whilst, as a result of the pandemic, this year’s emphasis differs from those of past years, we still look forward to supporting exciting and inspirational projects which will help those in need.

Projects and activities will require to be able to be achieved in light of the restrictions and guidelines imposed as a result of COVID-19 e.g. social distancing.

GCU researcher Audrey used her Magnusson Award to extend and enhance her social enterprise, The No.1 Befriending Agency in Greater Glasgow, which reduces loneliness and isolation through friendship and companionship, as well offering a bespoke person-centred care service. Audrey’s award helped to expand the Agency’s Cup of Friendship events - a series of tea parties bringing older people and young adults together for activities such as music and games, and also supported the launch of a telephone befriending service.
