Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) welcomed the Founder and Chairman of Barrhead Travel, one of the largest independent travel agencies in the UK, to deliver the 2016 Moffat Lecture.
Speaking in conversation with Professor John Lennon, Director of the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Development, Barrhead Travel’s Bill Munro shared his reflections on a life in travel telling the story of how his business grew from a small shop in Barrhead to now employing over 900 staff in 61 locations across the UK.
The event, on Tuesday, November 1, also provided the opportunity to celebrate new talent, with Moffat Scholarships presented to GCU tourism and events students.
The Moffat Scholarships were established in 1998 through generous funding from the Moffat Charitable Trust which established the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Business Development, a recognised leader in tourism business development and research, and nurturing new industry talent.

Diane Connor joins GCU this year following 18 years working with British Airways. She has just begun studying on the MSc International Tourism Management.
Christopher Greenwood is in the final year of his PhD in National Tourism Policy Development. He balances his PhD with his role as Senior Tourism Insight Manager at Visit Scotland.
Amy Love is a first year International Events Management student with a passion for community events. She has already built up considerable experience working with the Big Music Project and fundraising events for Yorkhill Hospital.
Douglas McCorquodale is a fourth year International Business and Tourism Management student who is proud to be receiving a Moffat scholarship for the second year in a row in recognition of his academic achievements and his industry experience.
Rebekah McGinn is a third year International Events Management student who received merit in her second year at GCU.
Andrew McKean is currently undertaking a PhD in Tourism and Canal Regeneration. He has a wealth of experience in this area, having working with Scottish Canals, Event Scotland and Visit Scotland.
Kirsty McMillan is a second year events student who achieved merit in her first year at GCU. Outside of her studies, she has devoted her time to volunteering at charity events.
Laura Sprowl is a third year International Events student who is also Visitor Experience Manager at Mount Stuart House on the Isle of Bute.
Suzanne Lynch is the winner of the 2016 Dr Margie Moffat Prize for Tourism. She was the top student of the 2015/16 graduating class of the BA (Hons) International Tourism Management programme. Since graduating, Suzanne has been successful in securing a graduate role with Principal Hayley hotels in Reading.
