COVID-19 Beneficiaries

Thank you from our students

2020 has been a challenging time for our students who have had to adapt quickly to online learning.  We have been engaging with GCU Foundation beneficiaries to learn about their lockdown experience and how your support has made a difference to their lives.

At the beginning of lockdown I struggled. This was something so new and strange to us all and I had no idea how I was going to continue my studies. I was using my iPhone to connect to online classes but this was continuously cutting out and I was not able to complete any essays. The laptop I received thanks to your support enabled me to access and contribute to online classes and I was able to submit two essays both of which were a first time pass! Without your donations this would not have been achievable and I would have had no other option but to drop out of my course. I can’t thank you enough.

BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies

As a husband and father I've had my family's safety on my mind and after contracting Covid-19 from my part time job at Tesco, the worry only increased. However, because of the donated laptop I was able to finish my first year course work and group project during my recovery all whilst home schooling my son. I finished the year with As in all my classes. GCU is one of the world leading places for students to be supported and helped to excel beyond the average. Thank you for providing me with the tools to ensure my studies can continue.

Lockdown has been a real struggle for me as it caused me mental, financial, physical and emotional hardships. I had some health issues and I was also struggling to do my assignment as my laptop broke down but the Common Good Fund donors supported me to overcome this challenge by purchasing a new laptop for me. I managed to do my assignment and get a pass. So, I would like to say thank you very much to the Common Good Fund for supporting me through this hard time.

I’ve found lockdown to be a very busy and stressful time with finishing off my dissertation and my coursework. However, I’ve been able to do so mainly because of the scholarship support I have received, as well as support from my lecturers. I’d like to give a massive thanks to those who support students like me as without your support the financial constraints would have been overwhelming. I’ve now been able to achieve my best possible work thanks to your support.

Receiving my scholarship has helped me throughout the year and has provided finance and support during lockdown, especially as I am unable to work currently and have no other income until September. Not only does the scholarship give me financial support but it also encourages and keeps me motivated when doing uni work, as I know I have a huge backing and others rooting for my academic success.

BA (Hons) International Fashion Business

The support I have received at GCU has meant I can study for the career I love without having to also work another job which would diminish our quality of life. The past few months have been challenging but it’s made me even more determined to work hard and to pay back the kindness you all have shown me. In the past year I've learned new skills, became class rep and earned three A's, one, B and one C. All of which I'm very proud of and thank you all for giving me the chance.

I’ve found studying whilst under lockdown to be a real learning experience in terms of my capabilities of working under extraordinary circumstances. The support from university lecturers during this time has been great and I have been particularly appreciative of the Foundation reaching out during these tough times to offer support to both myself and other scholarship recipients.

BA (Hons) International Events Management

As a single mother of two children who are now full time at home due to the current global pandemic, studying at home has been a challenge. However, practising meditation and mindfulness has helped me in dealing with stress, anxiety and overall mental health and well-being. In addition, the scholarship support has been of huge significance to my financial status especially at these very hard unprecedented times. I could not thank donors enough.

My scholarship has been a great support over the past year. During lockdown I’ve been trying to keep active doing my 10,000 steps as day and kept in touch with my lecturers and fellow students. This has really helped me to keep on track with submitting my final essays at the end of my 1st year.

BSc (Hons) Social Work

Without my scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to progress my business ideas or have had access to the most up to date information about how the pandemic is affecting the fashion industry. Lockdown hasn’t been the easiest adjustment for me, as I’m sure is the case for many, however it has given me the gift of time to work on my business and to reconnect with my loved ones.
