Facilities
  • Mechanical Engineering workshops: offers 5 axes milling machine, material testing machines, injection moulding and EDM.
  • Smart Energy lab: live renewable energy monitoring and control is achievable in our SEL, where wind and PV energy are harnessed from the roof mounted wind turbines and PV panels, with the aid of in-lab monitoring and data acquisitions tools, the smart home performance is controlled to match the generated energy.
  • Process materials testing facility – one of the few independent research facilities for pneumatic conveying and solids handling worldwide.
  • The Department houses the Caledonian Advanced Microscopy and Analytical Services (CAMAS) team.  This team of highly skilled academics is at the forefront of forensic examination in Scotland, using unique microscopy equipment for purposes such as sophisticated environmental and pharmaceutical analysis, testing oil industry waste, detecting residual pharmaceuticals in hospital sewage and environmental monitoring of farm emissions.

Regularly asked to provide Expert Witness evidence on toxicology and drug analysis, fire accelerant analysis and gun residue testing, CAMAS is developing cutting edge analytical processes which can help prevent pollution and find bio-markers of human neurological diseases to aid in medical diagnosis.

Clients include police and fire services, SEPA, Scottish Water, oil, pharma, environmental and forensic sector companies.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)

The Department is active in the provision of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs). Current examples include:

Highland Colour Coatings Ltd

This Cumbernauld based company are industry leaders in coatings for metallic structures used in a wide range of industries. They have entered into a 2½ year KTP partnership which will carry out research into coating technology and the complex problem of ‘pinholing’ at a cost of £166k.
To address this problem the Department is applying its expertise and knowledge of materials technology, polymer and inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering and process plant testing.

Mahle Engine Systems

Leading global manufacturer of components and systems for combustion engines, the Mahle Group’s operational base in Kilmarnock is collaborating with SEBE in a 2-year KTP, worth £256k, to investigate problems with bronze metallic strip and bearing components for automotive applications.
The complexity of the cold bonding process involved can give rise to unpredictable variations in bond integrity and in the worst case, delamination. This is a long-standing industry-wide issue, which Mahle wants to both fully investigate and develop improved production and quality monitoring processes.

The Howden Academy

The Howden Academy is a fine example of great partnerships between industry and academia in action. Howden and Glasgow Caledonian University have worked in partnership to develop Howden Academy, which was launched in July 2008. The Academy combines Howden’s specialist engineering skills and experience with the teaching expertise and world class learning facilities of Glasgow Caledonian University.
Howden Academy helps the company to attract and retain the very best engineers. It provides new personnel with the fastest possible route to full productivity and allows them to quickly start making a genuine contribution to the company’s activities. Lecturers from the School of Engineering and Built Environment led by Professor David Harrison from the Department of Mechanical , Electrical & Environmental Engineering are fully involved in the preparation of the teaching materials, enabling Howden Academy to use the best techniques available.
