The career of a contemporary civil engineer in 2020 includes challenges ranging adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change, managing the needs of a growing population, complying with ever more stringent environmental standards, maintaining ageing infrastructure and meeting the requirements of a low carbon economy.  The purpose of GCU’s BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Environmental Civil Engineering) Graduate Apprenticeship is to produce multi-disciplinary graduates with the skills and knowledge required to be successful in all of the aforementioned areas of the civil engineering profession, either as a designer, contractor, consultant or water professional. 

This Apprenticeship programme will develop your skills and experience in the civil engineering disciplines of structures, construction materials, geotechnics and water resource management and has been developed in partnership with employers to ensure it meets contemporary industry needs. GCU’s highly applied approach to the design and delivery of industry-focused work-based programmes ensures that apprentices and employers benefit from a real-time optimisation of academic learning at work.  GCU’s graduates are known for their employability and readiness: this programme is suited to candidates working in a civil engineering role and an enthusiasm to advance their career through a work-based programme with access to professional qualifications.  Additionally, you will benefit from learning related to the University’s common good principles and values which in a civil engineering context relate specifically to environmental sustainability,

Upon graduation you will be eligible to apply for the qualification of IEng with the qualifying bodies that make up the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM – ICE, IStructE, IHE and IHT).

If you are reading this as in employer, Graduate Apprenticeships may be used for the dual purposes of workforce development (early career) as well as up-skilling and reskilling needs of more experienced middle and senior employees seeking to catch up on academic and professional qualifications.

All programmes are fully-funded by Skills Development Scotland; skills, knowledge, academic qualifications and experience of current employees will all be used to inform at which level of the programme candidates will commence their education.

All entry requirements listed here should be used as a guide and represent the minimum required to be considered for entry. Applicants who are made a conditional offer of a place may be asked to achieve more than is stated.

Standard entry

For new employees applying directly from school the entry requirements are Higher ABBB including Maths, Physics, Technological Studies or Engineering Science at B.

Foundation Apprenticeships

We accept selected Foundation Apprenticeships, in combination with SQA Highers, for entry to our degree programmes. Your Foundation Apprenticeship will take the place of one SQA Higher qualification for our standard entry requirements and will be treated as equivalent to a B grade at Higher.


Non-Standard Entry

For applicants with prior work experience and professional qualifications consideration for advanced standing into a higher level of study can be managed through the University’s Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and process.  Those who meet the conditions for RPL will be supported through the process to demonstrate that they meet the criteria. 

Additional requirements

Candidates must be employed in the same field as the course of study and must supply a supporting letter from their employer as part of the admissions process.

We understand that you may be wondering how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect your University start next term. At GCU our work-based, Graduate Apprenticeship programmes were designed to be delivered through a combination of face to face and online learning. During COVID-19 restrictions we have temporarily pivoted to full online delivery. We are ready to receive new students from October 2020 and look forward to welcoming you virtually as things change we will keep you and your employer informed.

We have created a dedicated space where we answer some of the questions you may have around COVID-19 and starting University.

Graduates may embark on a range of career pathways including contracting, consultancy and design, with specialism in any of the core areas of structures, geotechnics or water resource management. This can involve using these skills in the development of transportation networks, commercial and residential development, industrial installations, public buildings, bridges, airports and utilities infrastructure such as water and wastewater treatment plants and flood mitigation systems.

This course commences with a two-day induction followed by attendance one day a week. This breaks down into:

Trimester A

12 days’ attendance (mid-September to mid-December)

Trimester B

12 days’ attendance (mid-January to mid-April). Exams in May

Trimester C

Attendance for the work based project

Year 1 

Exit award: Certificate of Higher Education level

Structural Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Work Based Learning 1, Construction Materials, Applied Mathematics 1.

 

Year 2

Exit award: Diploma of Higher Education level

Geotechnics, Structural Design and Analysis, Work Based Learning 2, Design of Structures, Construction Processes Management 1, Construction Contracts 2.

 

Level 3

Exit award: BSc Civil Engineering (Environmental Civil Engineering) (Degree Level)

Composite Materials Performance, Hydraulics, Geotechnical Design, Work Based Learning 3, Structural Engineering, Public Health, Water and Wastewater Treatment.

 

Level 4

Exit award: BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering (Environmental Civil Engineering)

Advanced Structural Engineering, Water Resource management, Waste Management & Contaminated Land, Dissertation.

We adopt a transformative approach to learning, placing the apprentice at the centre of curriculum delivery.  In line with GCU’s Learning and Teaching Strategy, we will make use of online resources, supported by on-campus delivery from Subject Matter Experts; to create an empowering experience based on a co-created, apprentice and employer-led, work-based programme.

Graduate Apprenticeships are co-designed by GCU and industry partners. GCU invites a diverse range of guest lecturers - dependent on relevant subject areas, current industry news and course needs - to share their expertise in every subject area.

The Apprenticeship is delivered via blended learning (online and face to face). All reading material, tutor discussions, assignment setting, marking and feedback, timelines and key dates are located in the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) GCU Learn. Through a one password access logon for the VLE, students also access the University’s library.
