Study Mechanical and Power Plant Systems and learn about sustainable energy production such as power generation, transmission, distribution, utilisation and energy conservation. Enjoy industrial placements and specialist power engineering and engineering design modules.
The current move towards renewable energy will require substantial transmission and distribution infrastructure development and an increasing number of power systems engineers to deliver it.
This programme covers the fields of power generation, transmission, distribution and utilisation, and is also concerned with energy conservation and with the design of systems based on electric motors and electronic drive technologies.
Specialist modules in power engineering and engineering design are introduced in the 3rd and 4th years, culminating in a major project in electrical/ mechanical power engineering.
This programme offers two industrial based placements, during trimester B of Year 3 and/or on completion of Year 3 – one for 48 weeks. Both are not compulsory or guaranteed placements.
Designed to meet the accreditation requirements of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). All MEng pathways satisfy the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) status. The BEng (Hons) pathway also meets the academic requirements for C.Eng status if an appropriate MSc programme is completed following graduation.
HND in Mechanical Engineering with B in the Graded Units and Engineering Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Maths Summer School
Attendance and pass at Maths Summer School is essential for those without Mathematics for Engineering 3 or Engineering Mathematics 5.

Students whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold the equivalent of an Academic IELTS test score of 6.0 with no element less than 5.5.

Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our pre-sessional English programme which is taught at our Glasgow campus.

Our aim is to build our students abilities in the areas demanded by employers in a global knowledge economy, through linking with employers to provide students with an authentic learning experience that blends with relevant studies.
Our students find that one of the underlying strengths of this programme of study is the other students as many currently enrolled are conducting their studies part-time, whilst holding down full-time jobs, or are sponsored by international companies. The valuable experience of these students is fed back into the classroom and informally shared to the benefit of fellow students.
The pastoral care of our students is an important element of our remit and all of our students are allocated a personal tutor as well as being encouraged to follow a Personal Development Planning scheme to underpin their self-reflection and development.
Our Peer Assisted Study Sessions forms a link between students from the later years of the programme to assist new students and student counsellors develop bonds between our students and the profession.
Visiting lecturers are invited from industry and commerce to contribute to programme delivery, ensuring that it is relevant and up to date and our students have the option to undertake a one year placement in industry during their third year and fourth year of studies. This placement will be recognised on the award the student receives upon leaving university. This year out of the classroom will not affect their studies as a couple of modules have been designed to allow students to undertake the learning outcomes by distance learning during this time.
