Computer-aided mechanical engineering is a blend of mechanical engineering, computer-aided engineering and systems design engineering. A form of 'virtual engineering', it allows engineers to test new products or systems without having to build expensive prototypes.
This programme has been designed with industry input and uses standard industry software (such as PTC Creo for 3D modelling and manufacturing simulation and ANSYS for Finite Element Analysis) to give you an understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering - design, control, materials and manufacturing methods - as well as learning how to provide solutions to complex engineering problems. All of GCU's Engineering Programmes are accredited by UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and we have excellent links with industry, providing access to case studies, projects and work experience. All MEng pathways within the Engineering Suite satisfy the academic requirements required for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the programme meets/will contribute to the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

College HND: HND Mechanical Engineering with B in graded unit/s to include Engineering Mathematics 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Students whose first language is not English will normally be required to hold the equivalent of an Academic IELTS test score of 6.0 with no element less than 5.5.

Other academic and vocational qualifications
Each application to GCU is considered on an individual basis. If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning scheme.
If you do not meet the English language requirements, you may be eligible for our pre-sessional English programme which is taught at our Glasgow campus.

This programme employs a number of methods of assessment: traditional end of trimester examinations coursework throughout the trimester group work/peer assessment poster presentations. In the first year of the programme there are no end-of-trimester examinations.
A number of integrated approaches are employed to achieve the necessary aims, objectives and learning outcomes required at this advanced level. To this end, a variety of teaching and learning methods and strategies are applied on the programme appropriate to the module material and to the specific aims and objectives involved. For example, some of the modules are more theoretical in nature or heavily practical or software based, whilst others are more discursive and presentation based. These therefore require different teaching and learning approaches. Therefore in addition to the more traditional lectures and tutorial approach, a range of other suitable teaching and learning approaches will be adopted and examples of these will include: student and tutor led seminars Industrial guest seminars Research seminars Formative assessments Computer application activities Self-directed and independent learning Problem solving practical laboratories Simulation laboratories Managed Learning Environments (e.g GCU Learn) Student presentations Group projects Industrial case studies Discursive case studies Problem-based learning scenarios Research based teaching materials and methods The tutorial and laboratory work will in essence be geared to design issues, application developments and problem solving to help solidify concepts and theories learned in lectures. You may also have the opportunity to undertake some of your studies abroad for a trimester or one year through ERASMUS projects.
