Professor Binsheng (Ben) Zhang obtained BEng in 1982, MSc in 1984 and PhD in Concrete Materials Science in 1987 at Tongji University in Shanghai. After briefly worked as a Lecturer, he joined Department of Civil Engineering at Glasgow University in 1988 as a Research Fellow, working on EPSRC and industrial projects until 2002. After worked as a Structural Engineering Consultant for two years, he became a Lecturer in Structural Engineering in 2003 in School of Engineering and the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University. In 2013, he joined Glasgow Caledonian University as a Senior Lecturer in Civil and Structural Engineering, and became a Professor in 2016.

Professor Zhang’s teaching, research and consultancy interests include design, analysis and modelling of concrete, timber and steel structures, construction materials technology, dynamic performance of structures, and tests on mechanical properties and structural performance of construction materials under loading and extreme environmental conditions (e.g. fire). He has published 3 textbooks and over 70 journal and conference papers. He has been a Guest Professor and a Visiting Fellow to some universities in China and Australia. He has been actively involved in two European COST Actions. He is also a member of the UK Timber Design Code Committee and a European Standard Committee on Timber Floor Vibration Testing.
