Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering's overarching philosophy is to provide a high quality teaching and learning experience and to produce high-calibre, industry-ready graduate engineers.  The expertise of staff in the Department ranges from Computer Aided Engineering Design, Advanced Manufacturing, Composites Material, Engineering Analysis, Surface Engineering, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Multi Phase Flow, Robotics, Predictive Maintenance, Reliability Engineering, and Process Optimisation.

The Department has 3 Undergraduate Programmes and 1 Postgraduate Programme. The MEng/BEng(Hons) Computer Aided Mechanical Engineering programme with pathway and the MEng/BEng(Hons) Mechanical Systems Engineering programme. The Mechanical Systems Engineering programme offers a highly integrated discipline which harness the influence of a range of specialism in the design and development of modern innovative products. The Computer Aided Mechanical Engineering programme provide an excellent broad-based mechanical engineering education with the application of state-of-the-art computer technology and software to the design and manufacture and control and instrumentation of engineering components. The MEng/BEng(Hons) programmes allow our graduates to be capable of practising and progressing within the industrial and commercial environment, as highly skilled Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) Engineers.

The Department has a Master programme in Mechanical Engineering. The MSc programme offers two specialist study options in Design and Manufacture. An important underpinning element of this programme is its alignment with the requirements of globally recognised professional engineering standards and the Accreditation from Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is equipped with state of the art laboratory infrastructure which include; a thermo-dynamics lab, materials lab, advanced manufacturing, 3D printing and rapid prototyping, general engineering applications. The Department have designated computer lab with specialist Software such as Auto CAD, PTC Creo, ANSYS, Pro Engineer, WITNESS and other relevant softwares.

Teaching and Learning materials are made available to students through our GCU Learn virtual learning portal, our students have access to lecture materials any time. Students submit their assignments through GCU learn portal, we also allow student to do assessment online. The Department overall National Student Survey (NSS) score of all programmes is over 80%. This demonstrate and excellent student satisfaction in teaching and learning approaches in Mechanical Engineering subject areas.

The Department has very strong links with industry, with our graduates get jobs in companies such as BAE systems, Jacobs, Rolls Royce, Howden, Babcook, Siemens, Aggreko, ScottishPower, Scotrail, EDF Energy, NATS, Diageo, SNC Lavalin, Mitsubishi Air Conditioning Electrics as well as in the Oil and Gas industry.

Research

The Engineering Simulation and Advanced Manufacturing (ESAM) Research Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering work collaboratively to produce outstanding innovative research to solve real-world engineering problems. The group have research grants in excess of 1.2 million pounds in the last 5 years and the group research is focused on providing practical solutions for industry based on applied research, consultancy and knowledge transfer using expertise in engineering simulation, materials characterisation, advanced manufacture and predictive maintenance. The group has 22 PhD students.

Accreditation and partnerships

The Department of Mechanical Engineering programmes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). In the Higher Education sector, 4 subject disciplines in General Engineering within Scottish Engineering are first in Scotland. Mechanical Engineering moved from 7th in Scotland to 3rd position.

The Department has an international partnership with the National University of Science and Technology in the Sultanate of Oman. Other Transnational Education activities include the University of Jinan in China, and African Leadership College in Mauritius.
