Cyber Security and Networks
The Department of Cyber Security and Networks covers range of learning disciplines within the field which include: cyber security, digital forensics, ethical hacking, computer networking and internetwork engineering.
All of our programmes are vocationally embedded, they offer hands on practical experience as well as the theoretical underpinning. We have an excellent relationship with the colleges and provides a pathway for students entering their degrees from HNC/HND qualifications. Our labs are well equipped and utilise both physical and virtual learning environments which are of industry standard, additionally we utilise the industry standard software. We are the only university in the UK offering a CCIE level PG programme and additionally it is fully integrated to be distance learning, but with the students engaging with the full-time cohort, and the first Scottish University offering a degree level Graduate Apprenticeship in Cyber Security.
Student overall satisfaction on our courses in 2018 was rated at 81%. Many of our students secure employment within 6 months of graduating with some even securing job offers before completing their degree with us at GCU. The cyber market trend shows there are many unfilled vacancies and this is to continue in the foreseeable future with companies such as Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan and BT actively recruiting in the field.
The department staff work closely with the student society - The Ethical Hacking Society and alongside the society the department runs The Cyber Clinic.
We also offer a range of CPD courses through the Digital Skills Academy
Research
Staff in the department are involved in research activities such as IOT, machine learning, sensor networks and network protocol development.
Accreditation and partnerships
Our undergraduate degrees are accredited by the British Computer Society.
We are proud to have been working with IDCyber Solutions of nearly 2 years and through this partnership we have trained 70+ students to be registered Cyber Essential Practitioners
The Department is a member of the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance: SICSA. This collaboration of Scottish universities aims to develop Scotland's place as a world leader in Informatics and Computer Science research and education, and in particular SICSA: Cyber Nexus.
