GCU is celebrated as Job Ready by business leaders

Job Ready: Universities, employers and students creating success

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has been hailed as ‘job ready’ by business leaders in a new project launched today (July 8) by University Alliance, which represents top universities for employability in science, technology, design and the professions.

The report, Job Ready: Universities, employers and students creating success published today, spoke to 50 employers around the UK about their experiences of working with higher education institutions. The campaign launched on the back of the report celebrates the positive impact university and business collaborations make to students and graduates.

GCU is one of Scotland’s leading universities with 95%* of 2013 graduates in work or in further study six months after graduation*.

Babcock International, one of the UK's leading engineering support services, Belinda Earl, Style Director, Marks & Spencer and Aspirare Recruitment, a professional and technical recruitment company, commended GCU on its work to bridge the gap between academia and the corporate world.

Marks & Spencer established a unique partnership with the British School of Fashion in 2013 and supports an annual scholarship scheme of £50,000, which is awarded to students on fashion business programmes in GCU London.

Belinda Earl said: “In our interactions with GCU, we have found the University to be open-minded and directional.

"As part of the programme, we pledge to mentor students and bring them into the business so they can apply what they’ve learned in academia to a real-world setting. The programme is about nurturing new talent and developing new techniques as well as investing in developing the skills of the future.”

Christine Mann, Resource & Employee Development Manager, Babcock International, and Giles Penderleith, Joint MD, Aspirare Recruitment, are also cited in the Job Ready campaign. They describe GCU as entrepreneurial, proactive and career orientated.
