Rise in student numbers as pupils get a taste of university life

The programme deals extensively with the fashion industry

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has recorded a rise in the number of sixth year pupils studying its Fashion Brand Retailing programme at the university.

The day release programme now has 87 pupils – a rise of 21 on the previous year – from 44 schools across Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire.

On completion of the course, the pupils will gain a university qualification which is equivalent to an Advanced Higher.

One in three of last year’s Fashion Brand Retailing cohort went on to study Fashion and Business courses at GCU.

Fashion Brand Retailing programme leader Nicola O'Hare said: “The programme offers pupils a real insight into the fashion industry. It gives them experience of university life and they get to work with companies, such as Urban Outfitters, and take part in live projects.

“Most recently, pupils showcased their designs at the Made in Lanarkshire fashion show to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of David Livingstone. The programme is going from strength-to-strength and is an excellent transition for pupils considering further or higher education."
