GCU collaboration receives award from First Minister

Colin Murchison and Professor Jim Baird receive the award from Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond

Developers of an eco-friendly phone app, designed to help small businesses reduce their carbon footprint, have received a £50,000 prize from Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond.

Green Oak Solutions - in collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University - created the web and phone application as part the Scottish Government-backed SME Enviro App competition.

‘Care to Compare’ helps small to medium-sized businesses by measuring improvements in energy use, water consumption and waste management.

The £50,000 winners’ grant will be used to further develop, finalise and deploy the solution in a number of SMEs around Scotland on a wide variety of platforms. The developers will also visit the Microsoft Global Apps and Environmental Teams in Washington.

The successful students were: Martin Grant (MSc Waste Management), Andrew Bahan (3rd Year Graphic Design for Digital Media) and Max N’Yampala (3rd Year Web Systems Development).

The First Minister said: “I’m delighted to present this well-deserved award to the team from Green Oak Solutions and Glasgow Caledonian University.

“Their winning app can help businesses across Scotland to measure, manage and reduce their carbon footprint, while making cost savings at the same time.”

Congratulating the team, Dean of the School, Professor Doug Greenhalgh commented: “We are very pleased to have been successful in this competition and to be helping businesses inScotlandmanage their carbon emissions. This is another demonstration of the high calibre of our students, their ability to collaborate effectively with industry and their commitment to global issues.”

Members of the winning team will travel to theUS, where they will learn more about Microsoft’s global commitment to Climate Change actions and explore ways to further develop the Care to Co2mpare app.

The app is due to be released next April.
