Eco-friendly phone app wins £50,000 development grant

Care to Compare aims to reduce the carbon footprint of businesses

Green Oak Solutions, in a collaboration with Glasgow Caledonian University, have come first in the Scottish Government-backed SME Enviro App competition, winning a £50,000 development grant and a visit to Microsoft’s head offices in the US.

The Green Oak Solutions/GCU team unveiled an innovative web and phone app, Care to Compare, at the finals of the nationwide challenge in Edinburgh.

Care to Compare is designed to help small and medium sized businesses take steps to reduce their carbon footprint as part of the Scottish Government’s target to cut emissions by 42% by 2020.

GCU Professor Jim Baird, of the School of Engineering and Built Environment, said: “We teamed up with the developers at Green Oak Solutions to work on this project and are delighted to have won the competition in the face of some very stiff competition.

“The Care to Compare app will encourage SMEs to engage in the carbon debate and work towards playing their role in a low carbon economy for Scotland. The app could play a vital role in carbon cutting among SMEs over the next few years.”

The judging panel was made up of representatives of the Government’s 2020 Climate Group and competition sponsors, headed by Ian Marchant, CEO of Scottish and Southern Energy, and including David Sigsworth, Chairman of SEPA, John Mason, Director of Business at the Scottish Government, and Lars Lindstedt, Principal Software Economist at Microsoft.

The £50,000 winners’ grant will be used to further develop, finalise and deploy the solution in as many SMEs around Scotland on the widest variety of platforms.

GCU students Max Engesu and Martin Garrett, plus two other members of the Green Oak Solutions/GCU team will travel to the Microsoft corporate HQ in Redmond, Washington and are looking forward to deepening their knowledge of Microsoft’s global commitment to Climate Change actions and to developing more insight into the opportunities presented to develop the Care to Compare app though the Windows 8 App store and the scalability offered by the Azure Cloud hosting platform.
