Budding engineers share their ideas with Minister Somerville

Minister Somerville

Shirley-Anne Somerville, Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, spoke to pupils from schools across the country competing in an engineering competition at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) today, Friday April 28.

The University was hosting the Engineering Development Trust’s Engineering Education Scheme (EES) Celebration Day, promoting the achievements of school pupils working with industrial companies to learn about the world of engineering.

The pupils spent time talking with the Minister and sharing their competition entries.

In an address to the competitors, GCU’s Head of Engineering Professor Scott McMeekin, said: “It’s about getting the knowledge to find the solutions to engineering problems. Having the knowledge gives you power. “

The winning entry was awarded to Wallace High School, while Oldmachar Academy picked up the pupils’ choice award.

The pupils who completed the EES project will be eligible to graduate as Industrial Cadets. The Industrial Cadet Award is an industry-led standard that evidences the breadth and depth of study undertaken by the students.

The Engineering Development Trust aims to raise awareness of the vital contribution that engineering and technology makes to our society and economy. Through a series of tasters, projects and placements, the Trust works in partnership with industry and schools to encourage careers in science, engineering and technology.
