Under starter's orders for IMechE President lecture

07 March 2017

Under starter

Jon Hilton.

Engineering students and staff at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) will hear about IMechE President Jon Hilton’s life in the fast lane at a special lecture tomorrow.

In his address, Jon will share some of the key milestones he reached on the road to becoming President of the Institute for Mechanical Engineers, which accredits a number of GCU programmes.

He will reflect on his 15 successful years working in the motorsport industry, which, he says, “was an opportunity to play with someone else’s multimillion-pound Meccano set”.

Jon ran the UK-based Engine Division of the Renault F1 Team, making a significant contribution to the double back-to-back world titles for Renault and Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006.

Highlighting the role of entrepreneurs and reminding professional engineers of how well-placed they are to take up this crucial role is also a key element of the address.

Dr Andrew Cowell, Programme Lead for Computer Aided Mechanical Engineering, said: “The Mechanical Engineering degrees at GCU are accredited by IMechE, so it is always inspiring to hear the President talk about his work in industry, and within the Institute.”

The lecture takes place in the Deeprose Lecture Theatre from 3.45pm.
