GCU students celebrate success with industry leaders

Anna Cirignaco, owner and Managing Director of Eleganza Sposa, and Charles Berry, Chairman of engineering firm Weir Group.

Students from Glasgow Caledonian University’s (GCU) Glasgow School for Business and Society celebrated graduation with two leading industry figures at today's winter ceremony, Wednesday November 23.

The University honoured Charles Berry, Chairman of engineering firm Weir Group, and Anna Cirignaco, owner and Managing Director of Eleganza Sposa.

Following an opening address from Chair of Court Mrs Hazel Brooke MBE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE capped the graduands and conferred the degrees.

Glasgow-born Charles received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering in recognition of his expertise within the field of engineering and his charitable work.

Now the Chairman of a leading global engineering firm, Weir Group, Charles began as an apprentice within the company he now leads. He addressed business graduates and spoke to them about the importance of being a global citizen and encouraged graduates to continue to promote equal opportunities for women in the boardroom.

He said: “Be ambitious for yourself and your colleagues, lead and bring others along the way, and we will all win.”

Anna Cirignaco, owner and Managing Director of Elezanga Sposa, a leading Scottish luxury retailer, was honoured with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration in recognition of her services to the fashion industry and support of GCU students. Anna has worked closely with the University's Fashion, Marketing and Retailing department, in particular, assisting students with internships and mentoring them in the business of fashion.

She said: “The one thing that has not changed in business is having passion for what you do. I would encourage other companies to work with GCU as the rewards are reciprocal. If you work hard and have passion for what you do, the possibilities will be endless.”

The winter ceremonies saw more than 1660 students celebrate their academic success and recognised the outstanding contribution of five leading citizens from across industry.
