Embrace change, says entrepreneur Andrew Mason

Andrew Mason

“The ability to embrace change, and use it as an opportunity, is the key to success.”

This was the advice of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) alumnus Andrew Mason at a University Masterclass last night.

Students and professionals alike were given an insight into how to adapt and build their careers in an ever-changing work environment, learning from Andrew’s 25 years’ business experience, much of which has been accrued as an entrepreneur both in the UK and internationally.

During his Masterclass, entitled, Get Back To Work, Change The World, Andrew looked at how successful students and professionals alike need to consider developing and challenging their skills and qualifications.

Professionally qualified as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Andrew challenged his skills and interests by moving into private-jet brokerage, international real estate, family office, private client advisory, fine art, technology and media.

During the Masterclass, he also offered an international insight into the world of private client and high net worth advisory.

He said: “In today’s circumstances in economy, there is a requirement for people going through education or through their career to look at taking the skills they have developed and adapting them as they move forward. Not everybody is going to have the same job throughout their entire career. Whether it’s boom or bust, we all have to take change, embrace it and progress with it.”

At the event, Andrew also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from GCU Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE.

He said: “It is a very humbling experience for me to receive this. I’m truly honoured and I’m glad I have had the opportunity to give something back to the University.”

Professor John Lennon, Assistant Vice Principal Business Development, chaired a Q&A session with Andrew at the event.

He said: “Andrew has provided practically grounded insights for our graduate start-up facility, UHatch, offering a valuable mentor service and helping build connectivity with a wide range of his global network of business contacts.

“His approach is always proactive, goal oriented and he has provided a much valued input for both students and academic colleagues.”
