Volunteering Opportunities at The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice

The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice (see http://www.ppwh.org.uk/default.html) is based in the centre of Glasgow and provides palliative care to a range of patients. They take a holistic approach, recognising patients' emotional, social and spiritual needs as well as practising advanced pain and symptom control. They also offer practical and emotional support to families and carers.

Volunteers are central to the standard of care services provided by the Hospice and are involved in nearly every area of their services. They are currently looking for volunteers in the following areas:

Activity Volunteers

Activity volunteers prepare and deliver activities for patients under the guidance of Hospice staff. This includes running sessions, encouraging patients to participate but also being sensitive to their desire to leave the session or take a passive role. You should have good interpersonal and communication skills, get on well with other people and understand the importance of patient confidentiality. You also need to work well with other volunteers and staff, be reliable and physically fit.

Volunteer Charity Shop Assistants

The Hospice needs volunteers with excellent customer service skills to provide a friendly service in their charity shops. This will include sorting through incoming donations and assisting with pricing and displaying donations for the public. Ideally you would be available for 3 hours per week/fortnight and be able to work well with other volunteers and staff members.

Volunteer Complimentary Therapist/Beautician

The Hospice offers aromatherapy, reflexology, therapeutic massage and beauty therapy to their patients, carers and staff and would welcome volunteer Complimentary Therapists. You would need to be qualified to Diploma standard in a relevant area, be able to operate under your own insurance and be able to provide the Hospice with an up to date copy of your certificate of insurance.

If you are interested in any of the above opportunities, please contact Sandra Anderson, Volunteer Services Coordinator at Sandra.anderson@ppwh.org.uk or call 0141 429 5599.

Please let us know that you have applied for our records and so that we can sign you up to the Student Leaders Programme – email us at cv@gcu.ac.uk.
