GCU hosts inaugural Foundation Dinner

Guest of honour Sir Alex Ferguson was interviewed by Anna Magnusson

The inaugural 2016 Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Foundation Dinner raised more than £80,000 in support of student scholarships and activities.

Two hundred guests joined GCU honorary graduate and donor Sir Alex Ferguson CBE, the guest of honour, at last night’s fundraising event held on campus at the Saltire Centre.

In her welcome speech, Professor Pamela Gillies, Principal and Vice-Chancellor CBE FRSE, highlighted GCU’s impact as the University for the Common Good, including its sector leading record in widening access to higher education.

Fred MacAulay compered the proceedings, which included Sir Alex discussing his career and commitment to GCU with writer and broadcaster Anna Magnusson, daughter of the late GCU Chancellor Magnus Magnusson KBE.

Auction prizes included a day at Old Trafford in the company of Sir Alex; a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, donated by GCU honorary graduate Dr Khalid Abdul Rahim; a limited edition sculpture by Scottish artist Andy Scott and a diamond pendant from Professor Brian Duffy.

All costs of hosting the Dinner were covered through headline sponsorship from Johnston Mailing, and from support sponsors Robertson Group and Turner and Townsend.

Today, Sir Alex met the first four recipients of the Sir Alex Ferguson Award and addressed students and staff at An Audience with Sir Alex Ferguson, hosted by GCU graduate David Farrell. The STV Glasgow presenter explored the secret behind Sir Alex’ success before the former Manchester United manager answered questions from the audience.

Jill Watt, Director of the Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation, said: “The inaugural Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation Dinner was a fantastic success thanks to the phenomenal support of Sir Alex Ferguson, our sponsors Johnston Mailing, Robertson Group and Turner and Townsend, our many donors and friends. With their backing, we are proud that all the proceeds will go towards creating access, inspiration and opportunities for students at GCU.”
