GCU students benefit from support of Santander Universities

Students, staff and representatives from Santander Universities gathered for the celebration event

Students spoke about how they have benefited from GCU’s partnership with Santander Universities at a celebration event held this week.

Hosted by Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation, the event gave representatives from Santander Universities the opportunity to hear from students who have been supported through scholarships and other forms of funding in the past year.

MA TV Fiction Writing student Laila Ruiz was awarded a scholarship that is helping her achieve her dream of working as a screenwriter.  Although still a student on the programme, she has already been offered a job as a script reader.

Speaking at the event, Laila, who is from Spain, said: “We attend great networking events and are building an amazing portfolio. This is my chance to develop my craft and progress my career, and to learn how to make it as a screenwriter in the UK.”

Fourth-year BA Business student Doug Jagger told the audience how his company Yupty, supported by GCU’s UHatch incubator space, is able to grow thanks to seed funding from the Santander Universities Entrepreneurial Fund. The company is an information site, operating in real time to give information about live music events in Glasgow.

A video presentation by 2015 Magnusson Award winner Rhiannon Walsh demonstrated how she has used the award to combine her main passions  – wildlife and documentaries – to make a film about her experience of volunteering at Chipangali Wildlife Orphanage in Zimbabwe.

Director of the Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation Jillian Watt said: “Since our partnership was established in 2009, Santander Universities has generously provided £700,000 to support students at GCU through a range of initiatives.

“Being able to hear first-hand from beneficiaries about the difference these awards have made to them is the best way for us to demonstrate to Santander Universities that their valued support is making a real impact to students at GCU.”
