Literacy mentoring

Volunteer as a Children’s Literacy Mentor

The Caledonian Club is GCU’s multi-award-winning widening participation and community engagement initiative, working across our local communities in Glasgow and London.

In order to tackle below-average progression rates into Higher Education, the Caledonian Club challenges perceived barriers to progression, raising aspirations and creating positive and rewarding experiences within a higher education setting. The club works with pupils, from nursery through to secondary, as well as parents and grandparents, many of whom are faced with challenges preventing them from achieving their true potential.

In 2015, the club launched the Literacy Programme in our partner primary schools in Glasgow with the aim of creating a love of reading and storytelling. Working with P2 pupils to help improve literacy skills, as well as building confidence and enjoyment in reading, the programme has been delivered with the support of our passionate, trained volunteers comprised of GCU students and alumni.

So far, over 20 alumni have volunteered as literacy mentors, many of whom have returned year after year to make a difference to multiple children.

Since its launch, the Literacy Programme has worked with almost 250 pupils on paired reading and phonics.

The Caledonian Club are currently seeking alumni who would be interested in volunteering their time as a Literacy Mentor this year. For more information on the programme, please visit their website and you can register to attend an information session here.

Thank you for your interest and support.
