Colin, at the time a final year journalism student on the verge of graduation, applied in October 2010 to be a part of the Press Operations team for last summer's London Olympics. After months of interviews and application forms, he was selected to be a part of the 20-man team, known as ONS, based at the Olympic Stadium. In his role as a Flash Quote reporter, Colin was able to interview the likes of Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Mo Farah and Oscar Pistorius just minutes after their individual competitions; from there, his quotes were sent to media outlets across the world.

“This was the biggest opportunity of my life - and in December 2011, when I sat down to work how I would manage it logistically, I realised I wasn't going to be able to afford it. I was unable to get a job due to my university work and extracurricular commitments, so the only way I could afford to travel to London and back was to use the utterly horrendous 12-hour Megabus! However, after receiving the award, that all changed. I was able to travel down by train (with a journey time of 4 hours in comparison) for my remaining training sessions as well as for the Olympics themselves.

“Without the Fund’s kindness, I genuinely don't know how I would've been able to afford to go on this life-changing experience.”
