I can’t pinpoint my favourite part of the programme because every new day I met my lecturers, my tutors, it’s been fun.
Obinna Anuruegbe

Obinna is an NHS trust doctor, specialising in Neonatal and Paediatric Surgery at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. We find out how he has used his expertise as a medical doctor to support those most in need.

He said: “There were new cases of leukaemia occurring and I became curious, I wanted answers, I thought public health, research. On the university ranking that year for specific areas such as research and impact, GCU came out tops.”

Once a medical doctor in Nigeria, he had his sights set on London because of the global reputation for public health.

Now, with a specialised degree under his belt, he looks after neonatal and child patients.

He continued: “There’s just something new and it’s different from what I expected. They are very homely, very welcoming and they go the extra mile. It’s not just a classroom thing.”

Inspired by his experiences in the medical field back home, Obinna wanted a model of social action that created real life change on a global scale.

In 2016 he won our prestigious London Alumnus of the Year Award.
