How was your time at GCU?

I chose GCU as it offered the greatest flexibility that fitted around my family commitments. The teaching was stimulating and the links with local authorities meant that I was able to undertake my placements of choice and benefit from exposure to statutory social work at the earliest opportunities.

How has your career progressed since GCU?

My course enabled me to kick start my career and be practice ready. Since then I have held a number of roles both in Scotland and England and progressed in my career and been able to make use of promotion opportunities.

I started as a Children and Families Social Worker in South Lanarkshire before relocating to the West Midlands where I have been a Senior Social Worker, Senior Practitioner and Team Manager in a number of Local Authorities.

I moved to The CAFCASS in 2009 as a Service Manager and I am now Head of Practice across 17 Local Authority areas in the Midlands. I have also been Chair of the Shropshire and Black Country Family Justice Board since 2013.

What are your words of wisdom?

My advice to current students would be to engage with the University and all it has to offer. But most importantly enjoy it.
