BSc Hons Construction Management 2006

Construction Manager at Laing O’Rourke

David Minnus successfully got his ideal job as a Construction Manager after studying BSc Hons Construction Management at GCU. We caught up with him to find out about his time studying at Glasgow Caledonian University.

How was your time at GCU?

I was aware of the University’s connection to various industries and in particular the construction industry. I knew of the track record for helping students into employment which I felt would be beneficial.

How has your career progressed since GCU?

During my studies, I worked on summer placements as a student engineer at a company called Mowlem which provided me with hands on experience of the construction industry. On completion of my degree programme, I gained a position on the Laing O'Rourke graduate management programme and worked through this programme as a trainee manager for 3 years.

On completion of the programme, I progressed to the role of a Section Manager, Senior Section Manager and now Construction Manager working on a range of projects ranging from £1million to £300 Million. The projects focused in areas such as health care, commercial, residential, demolition, utilities and infrastructure.

What are your words of wisdom?

My advice is to use the expertise and services the University provides to help you achieve your career plan as it has great links and recognition with employers, in my case within the construction and engineering industry.

I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed myself and took a great deal of knowledge from my studies. I always look at my time at the University fondly and with a sense of achievement, as I have gained a position with my current employer who I have had the opportunity to progress and develop with for over ten years.

Ultimately an employer looks to a candidate as someone who has a proven record to learn and develop. Therefore, use the opportunity to demonstrate this during your time at university and take that attitude with you into employment to continually develop the skills and knowledge you have learned at your time at GCU. Good luck!
