Loretta Bortey

Why did you choose GCU?

I chose GCU because they had the best course content and structure in Big Data. They were ranked as one of the best in student satisfaction and of course, at the centre of Scotland’s finest city.

How would you describe your experience at GCU?

Coming to GCU I must say has been a journey full of lessons and accomplishments. I took one of the boldest decisions l have ever taken in my life to run for Student Association president. I didn’t get the office, but I got back my self-confidence, my drive and an assurance that my dreams are valid and achievable. I excelled in my academics also and my confidence in my abilities coupled with my expertise that was polished in GCU gives me the opportunity to expand my reach and be anything I want to be.

What are your fondest memories of GCU?

As unbelievably boring and nerdy as it might sound, I fondly remember the most ever-advanced computer labs and my joy whenever I go there for my practicals. I felt invincible like this is what I was born to do. I remember my experiences meeting people while campaigning, making friends and building networks. These were some very fun times.

How would you describe the quality of the teaching and support you received from GCU?

The lecturers were excellent. They were ever ready to offer help when I needed it. The way they broke down some very complex subjects was amazing and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Can you tell us how you coped with the transition to online learning during the pandemic?

The transition to online teaching was one of the toughest moments for me as I had moved to a new accommodation without internet. But the school was helpful in giving me time to submit my coursework. There was enough guidance on how to use the online systems for teaching and learning also. Gradually I eased into the new virtual atmosphere and adjusted.
