Are you glad you came to GCU and why?

I had always wanted to be a nurse and Glasgow Tech, as it was then, offered a great undergraduate nursing programme. My memories of the collage and ward placements are, on the whole, very happy times. My passions for learning, wanting to make a difference & helping others were ignited then and they still burn strong today. As does my enjoyment of great cheese and wine which stemmed from our legendary nurses cheese and wines parties at the students union!! Suffice to say I am very glad social media was not around back then...

How has your GCU degree helped you?

Today I am Director of Macdonald Lewis Associates, a Life Sciences Executive Resourcing Company I founded in 2016. When I graduated from Glasgow Tech in 1988 and took up my Staff nurse post at Level 10 Surgical at the Western Infirmary I had no idea my future career path would take me from nursing into the Life Sciences Industry and then recruitment and from Glasgow via London to Shanghai and Singapore then back to London exploring and developing not just my career, but also passions and hobbies along the way. Professional opportunities along this path included delivering hands on patient care, undertaking clinical research to improve patient services, which resulted in the Glasgow GP I was working with securing funding for one of the first continence nurses in Glasgow ensuring products were where they should be at the right time and recruiting key individuals needed to develop, register, manufacture and market new innovative products. For me,one professional achievement I am particularly proud of is making the decision to take a career sabbatical in 2015 when I realised I was "burning out" and subsequently talking openly about this to try and help others avoid getting into this situation. Personal achievements.. that I have been a good role model to my niece and god children (one is the son of class mate of 88) and competing London 2015 marathon with my niece (my 3rd London and her first) is in my life top5 moments :-)
