Hazel Brooke MBE is a former Chair of Glasgow Caledonian University’s Court.

She chaired the University’s governing body, which is responsible for approving the University’s strategic direction and overseeing its performance and development, from February 2015 until February 2018. She served throughout the previous six years as a Court governor and as Vice-Chair.

Hazel has garnered a wealth of experience in corporate governance, having held both executive and non-executive positions in the public sector.

For 25 years she worked in Glasgow University’s Department of Child Health, first as co-ordinator of Yorkhill Cot Death Unit, and later as Executive Director of the Scottish Cot Death Trust, becoming a valued member of Scottish Government committees dealing with issues related to perinatal and infant mortality. Her particular interests are epidemiological research and international collaboration and she is a published researcher.

In 1987 The Scottish Cot Death Trust became a founding member of SIDS International, the worldwide federation of lay organisations involved in all aspects of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, including the funding of vitally important research collaborations. Since 1991, research-based advice has led to an 85% decrease in the incidence of cot death. From 1995-1998, Hazel chaired SIDS International and subsequently was charged with brokering its successful merger to form the International Society for the Study and Prevention of Perinatal and Infant Death (ISPID), a not-for-profit organisation that is leading the world in discovering evidence-based preventive measures for stillbirth and sudden infant death.

Hazel was for several years a non-Executive Director of Yorkhill NHS Trust. She chaired its Clinical Governance Committee and was a member of its Remuneration, Audit and Research and Education committees. In addition, she sat on Greater Glasgow Health Board’s Clinical Governance Committee.

In 1997 she was appointed MBE for services to the prevention of cot death.
