Dr Brian Williamson

Brian is a professional businessman and award-winning entrepreneur. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University, sponsored by Weir Pumps, and climbed the ladder of management quickly, looking after a department by the age of 21.

By 26, Brian had left Weir and secured his first MD position. The next 12 years saw Brian run various companies at board level. At the age of 38, he left formal employment to become an entrepreneur.

In 2006, Brian invested in a recruitment business called Brightwork, which he chaired before it was sold in 2017, returning to the shareholders a spectacular 75 times their original investment. In 2009, Brian invested in Jumpstart, an R&D tax specialist. He led the business from three people and not many more customers, to the fastest growing SME in Scotland by 2013. Quickly thereafter he secured £3.4m investment, which valued the business at around £12m.

In July 2015, Brian was diagnosed with cancer. He survived this with an operation and some post-op chemotherapy.

This made Brian realise he wasn’t ready to retire from business. Apart from being a Non-Executive Director in Jumpstart, he is also the Chairman of ThinkWhere, a Stirling-based data-sharing business. The newly established Stirling business Miigen, a social impact platform, also features in his portfolio. Brian is the Entrepreneur in Residence at business-development training enterprise Kissing with Confidence. He also advises other companies in their high-growth phase of development.

His spends his spare time with wife Sharon, sister Trisha and his two daughters Lauren and Sarah.
