Ian has been with Howden Group for 32 years and took over as Chief Executive O.cer in 2011. Ian is a qualified mechanical engineer (BSc Honours from the University of Strathclyde). He joined Howden in 1983 and worked his way up from graduate trainee − through roles in design and development, engineering management and project management – to become a general manager of various businesses and then Technical Director, Operations Director and Chief Executive.

Howden designs, engineers and supplies air and gas-handling equipment, including industrial fans, process gas compressors and rotary heat exchangers. Established over 150 years ago as an engineering firm in Glasgow, Howden has grown to become a worldwide organisation with over 6000 employees and companies in 26 countries.

Ian has a passion for engineering and is proud of the growth and success Howden has achieved. He believes that the key to Howden’s success and growth is the calibre and expertise of its people across the world to apply engineering expertise and Howden products innovatively to changing market and customer requirements.

To support ambitious growth targets, Howden and GCU worked in partnership to develop the Howden Academy. Launched in July 2008, the Academy combined Howden’s specialist engineering skills and experience with the teaching expertise and world-class learning facilities of GCU. In 2011, the Howden Academy won a Gold Award at the 2011 eLearning Awards in the category for excellence in the production of learning content in the private sector.

Ian is married with two daughters and lives in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. He is a keen rower and also enjoys skiing, sailing and golf.
