Dr Brian Molefe

HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING

Brian Molefe 680

In April this year, South African Minister of Public Enterprises, Ms Lynn Brown, announced Mr Brian Molefe’s secondment to the country’s power utility, Eskom, as Chief Executive.

He was previously at the helm of Transnet, the state-owned freight transport and logistics company responsible for South Africa’s rail freight, ports and pipelines network. At Transnet, he spearheaded the company’s ground-breaking market demand strategy, a rolling seven-year R336 billion infrastructure investment programme in rail, ports and pipelines.

Between 2003 and 2010, Mr Molefe had a successful period as the chief executive of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC). At the PIC, he led an unmatched growth in assets under management from R308 billion to just under R1 trillion between 2002 and 2010.

Mr Molefe has a Master of Business Leadership and B.Com degree from Unisa, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Economics from the University of London. He has also completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School, the Programme for Young Global Leaders at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as the Executive Programme from Wharton Business School.

Before joining the PIC, he was Deputy Director General at the National Treasury, where he was responsible for asset liability management.

Mr Molefe, a member of the South African National Defence Force’s reserve force and an honorary colonel in the South African Irish Regiment, has received several awards in recognition of his contribution to the economy, particularly his role in the advancement of black economic empowerment. These include being chosen Chief Executive Officer of the Decade by the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) and being named Africa’s Business Leader of the Year by Africa Investor in Tokyo, Japan, while CNBC Africa honoured him with the Business Success in Africa award.
