Dr Anna Sloan

Anna Sloan, an Olympic medal-winning curler and a graduate of Glasgow Caledonian University, was presented with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University today.

She is part of Team Muirhead, the youngest team to win an Olympic medal for Great Britain, claiming Bronze at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

Her award was conferred by Students Association President Michael Stephenson during GCU’s summer graduation ceremonies at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this week.

Michael said: “Anna demonstrates that hard work, commitment, boundless energy, combined with passion can, and will, inspire a generation”.

Accepting her award, Ms Sloan said: “GCU and its values have undoubtedly played a very important role in the success I have had in my curling career. Being able to balance such a hectic schedule is a daily battle of mine but GCU has most definitely been a huge building block in helping me find that perfect balance. It taught me the values of commitment and discipline during my studies, which I can relate directly to curling and being part of Team Muirhead.”

Originally from Lockerbie, Ms Sloan juggled her two main sports of horse riding and curling until she attended GCU between 2008-2011, where she studied Sport and Active Lifestyle Promotions.

Ms Sloan first competed internationally for Great Britain in curling at the age of 17, where she won Gold skipping her own rink in the European Youth Olympics.

She then successfully skipped her rink to Gold in the World University Games 2011, the first gold medal for Britain at a winter World University Games.

She then joined forces with her rival Eve Muirhead to form the youngest ever rink, becoming World Champions in 2013. They also became the only European team to win a Canadian Slam the same year.
