Tell us in more detail what your role entails, what challenges you currently face, and how you are finding ways to cope.

My role entails looking after patients within the hospital who have received a diagnosis of coronavirus or are who are high risk and awaiting results. This also involves end of life care which includes providing reassurance and support to patients during this time as there are very strict restrictions on visiting, meaning family members often cannot be there during this hard time.

As well as coronavirus, many of the patients have other underlying health issues which need to be monitored and treated.

Keeping positive is also important for my patients, as well as my colleagues. During my shifts I aim to be as upbeat as I can be and carry out the days as normally as I can!

Challenges I’ve faced currently is the lack of PPE. We are continually running out of masks on the ward. This is a major problem as if we don’t have the correct PPE we have a much higher risk of catching the virus ourselves. I have found this time very stressful, not only due to work but also as I am not seeing friends, family or my boyfriend!

Do you have a top tip for coping at a time of crisis? Or a few words of advice or support for fellow students and alumni on the front line?

My coping mechanisms have been lots of FaceTiming and doing online workouts! As I am also part of GCU Women’s Football and GCU Dance I have been missing them loads. Tonight I will be taking part in GCU Dance’s live online dance class which we are hoping to make a weekly fixture!

My advice for everyone right now is to call your friends and family, keep in touch, and stay positive!
