Alan’s toy story is the business

Alan Bennie

He turned around the fortunes of Matchbox toys, made the Thunderbirds Tracy Island a top Christmas must-have and unleashed the phenomenally successful Moshi Monsters. Now he is preparing to launch an amazing doll that can have a real conversation with her owner.

Alan Bennie, who co-founded Vivid Imaginations with partner Nick Austin, is a man at the top of his game in the international toy industry. Other Vivid Imaginations’ hits include One Direction boy band dolls as well as Spiderman and Toy Story 3 merchandise.

Now Alan, who was awarded a GCU Alumni Achievement Award in 2012, is bringing his own toy story to share with students, staff and guests at GCU.

In his masterclass, How to beat the multinationals at their own game, Alan will chart his days from graduate to the early days of Vivid Imaginations, a leading UK toy sales and marketing business with global retail sales of £193million.

He will talk about how he turned his back on corporate security to gamble everything on a new business start-up, the creation of a successful business model and the key drivers behind it, and how to spot a winning product, handle blockbuster brands and negotiate with powerful licensors and retailers.

“I was so honoured to receive an alumni achievement award last year from GCU and look forward to sharing some of my experiences in industry with the University’s students and staff,” said Alan.

Alan’s lecture, which takes place at GCU on Wednesday, March 26 is open to all students, staff and members of the public. Register Here
