GCU London honours Caparo Group COO

Mr Dawson will receive the award in recognition of his achievement in, and contribution, to engineering and industrial business management.

Douglas Dawson, Chief Operating Officer of Caparo Group, will be presented with an Alumni Achievement Award at the GCU London graduation ceremony next week.

Mr Dawson will receive the award in recognition of his achievement in, and contribution, to engineering and industrial business management.

He will join GCU London graduands at the ceremony in Christ Church, Spitalfields, on Wednesday, November 5.

Mr Dawson studied Engineering at Glasgow College of Technology, a founding institution of Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), and graduated in 1982. After graduation, he was appointed Chief Engineer as a sea-going Engineering Officer, before gaining over 25 years’ experience in industry, including in senior positions within BTR Industries, Citicorp Venture Capital and SPX Corporation.

He is currently Chief Operating Officer of Caparo Group, a privately-owned global industrial business and has partnered with the RSA Academy to create an active apprenticeship scheme in the UK.

Mr Dawson said: “I am surprised, humbled and delighted to receive this award. GCU was the first step for me on a very exciting and rewarding career in engineering and industry and without the platform that the University provided me with, I would not have been able to realise my ambitions.

“I hope this award gives inspiration to all young people contemplating a career in industry - regardless of their background."

During the graduation ceremony, the University will also honour Jane Shepherdson MBE, CEO of premium retailer Whistles, with an Honorary Professorship and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
