Principal to chair new taskforce on welfare and benefits

GCU Principal Pamela Gillies will chair the review of welfare and benefits.

GCU Principal Professor Pamela Gillies has been invited by Jim Murphy MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, to chair a new taskforce which will explore the welfare and benefits system in Glasgow and create a template for the rest of the UK.

As Chair, Professor Gillies will work with the Department of Work and Pensions, the Scotland Office, Glasgow City Council, and Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

The taskforce will look at potential solutions for welfare in the city within a UK benefits system, with a particular focus on disadvantaged groups, generational poverty and benefit reliance.

The group will also expolore issues around additional flexibility in employment support.

Mr Murphy has previously stated that he wants to “see Glasgow pioneer the most flexible welfare system in the UK”.
