Inspirational Abdullah Alotaiq is Student of the Year

Abdullah says receiving the award is an 'honour and a privilege'

The School of Engineering and Built Environment’s Abdullah Alotaiq has been named GCU’s Student of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the University community.

Abdullah, who is in his final year studying BEng Electrical Power Engineering, said: “The award has come completely out of the blue and I am over the moon. Representing GCU in this way is one of the greatest honours and privileges I will have in my life. I have had an amazing experience at GCU and rounding up my time here with this award is overwhelming.”

President of Caledonian Muslim Association (CUMSA) and a programme representative for the past two years, Abdullah is committed to supporting students and the wider community through volunteering and fundraising.

Abdullah, who is from Saudi Arabia and originally came to GCU as an INTO student, said: “I have worked hard to build on the good work of the previous committee of the Muslim Association and some of the most important activity we have been involved in is raising money for children’s charities alongside GCU’s other societies, and community work such as supporting homeless shelters and blood drives. We have also run events for GCU students such as workshops, revision classes and a monthly free tea and coffee stall.

“I have also enjoyed being a link between staff and students as a programme rep to help enhance the student experience. Volunteering is very rewarding and it makes me happy to help students – particularly those who are feeling homesick or a little lost as I have been there myself. I would encourage students to take up every opportunity to get involved with their community and societies and to volunteer. It’s good for you both personally and professionally and will make a huge impact on your life.”

Kevin Campbell, GCU Student Association President, said: “Over the last year, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Abdullah. His tireless dedication to championing our students has been nothing short of inspirational. A fountain of innovation, Abdullah never ceases to amaze me with his creative approaches to engaging students in community activism and grassroots campaigning on social issues. His work on developing future leaders at GCU and inspiring young children from disadvantaged backgrounds to access Higher Education has been incredible to witness. I can’t think of a more deserving winner of this award.”
