Bake Off: Creme de la Creme winner is icing on the cake at alumni afternoon tea

GCU alumna and pastry chef Helen Vass

Helen Vass, Glasgow Caledonian University alumna and winner of the BBC’s Bake Off: Crème de la Crème, is to roll out her signature pastries to alumni of GCU’s founding institutions The Queen’s College and The Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, affectionately known as The Dough School.

Pastry chef Ms Vass, part of a three-strong team that impressed the judges of the BBC show in May, will be creating desserts for 80 former students at an afternoon tea. At the event, the University will present a Lifetime Achievement Award to Elaine Acaster OBE, who studied a post-graduate Diploma in Dietetics at the Dough School and is a former vice-principal for strategy and governance at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.

Jillian Watt, Director of GCU Foundation, Alumni Engagement and Events, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming our alumni back to our campus and to be making this award to distinguished graduate Ms Acaster, celebrating the significant contribution she has made to education throughout her career. All of our graduates, including those of our founding institutions, are hugely important to us and it is an honour to be once again hosting such a fantastic event.”

Ms Vass said: “I absolutely loved my time at GCU and I am really looking forward to being involved with the afternoon tea and to showcasing my own skills to these highly skilled graduates, who are the foundation of what professional chefs are doing now. It will be a pleasure to meet these fantastic alumni and hear from them how cooking has developed throughout the years.”

Ms Acaster (formerly Wightman), lectured at The Dough School from 1968 to 1972 as well as studying there. She will be presented with GCU’s Kelpies Trophy, created by GCU honorary graduate sculptor Andy Scott and inspired by his iconic Kelpies sculpture.

The event is at 1pm on April 10.
