Henry Holland shares his advice for fashion industry success

GCU London welcomed Honorary Professor Henry Holland, internationally acclaimed fashion designer and entrepreneur, to deliver his inaugural Professorial Masterclass to students, staff and friends of GCU last night (November 30).

Professor Holland, founder of House of Holland and presenter of C4’s The Changing Room, shared his fashion business expertise in his lecture ‘Brand building on £500 – all the mistakes I advise you not to make’.

Henry said: “I think it’s really important for a university to have strong links with industry. It’s difficult for students to go out into the world and make the transition from education to employment – universities should take that approach and aligning with industry rather than just sending graduates out on their way. It’s important for universities to take responsibility. The journey doesn’t just end with graduation, it’s about sending students out into the world and assisting them where you can to realise their potential with the qualifications they’ve gained.”

As the University for the Common Good, GCU is committed to the advancement of business and management thinking and practice through the co-creation of knowledge with its industry partners, esteemed Honorary Professors, alumni network, researchers and diverse student population.

Professor Christopher Moore, Director of the British School of Fashion, said: “Henry Holland is a widely respected and dynamic figure in the international fashion industry and a keen supporter of the British School of Fashion. His inaugural Professorial Masterclass offered students and staff a unique opportunity to benefit from Professor Holland’s experience and achievements in the industry.”

GCU London is home to the British School of Fashion, the innovative academic hub developed by GCU to create and disseminate strategic fashion business insight through its provision of leading-edge education, research and consultancy.

After graduating from the London College of Communication with a BA Journalism, Henry Holland was catapulted into the fashion limelight in 2006 with his irreverent ‘fashion groupies’ slogan T-shirts. In February 2008, after two seasons showing with Fashion East, House of Holland held its first solo show on the London Fashion Week schedule to critical acclaim. House of Holland is now firmly established in the international fashion arena, and boasts an impressive roster of international premium stockists including Browns Focus, Brown Thomas, Colette, De Bijenkorf, Emporium, Galeries Lafayette, Harvey Nichols, Isetan, it, Liger, Luciana, Matches, Net-A-Porter, Opening Ceremony, Secret Location, Tsum and Tsvetnoy.
