GCU secures funding for SMEs from Santander Universities

Santander will provide funding of £150 per week towards the intern's salary

Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation has secured £27,000 of funding from Santander Universities, which offers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) the opportunity to employ students and graduates to work on a fixed-term project.

The 2016/17 Internship and Work Placement programme gives SMEs (fewer than 250 employees and a turnover of less than £50 million) access to funding for a GCU student or graduate to join their business on a two-week work placement or an internship of up to 10 weeks. Santander will fully fund the work placement salary at £300 per week, and part-fund the internship salary at £150 per week, with the remaining cost to be met by the company.

Through the initiative, students and graduates will have the chance to boost their studies or career by gaining valuable industry experience and skills. The internships can be in any field or sector.

Thomas Quinn, Managing Director of design firm Start Digital, recruited four GCU interns to help grow his business, three of whom are still employed by the company today. He said: “We’re a young business and growing the right team is crucial. The internships allow me to really test out a relationship and judge someone’s skills. It also allows the intern to settle into the role, so they can gain great experience and show me what they can do.”

Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation is hosting an SME Networking event for businesses to learn more about the programme. The event will take place at GCU at 5pm on Thursday, October 27.
