Cultural Fellow Blythe Duff to star in showcase of students’ plays

Blythe Duff stars in Awkward Dating

Actor Blythe Duff, a Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) Cultural Fellow, is to star in Awkward Dating, a series of micro plays written by students, alumni and staff.

Ms Duff will be joined by actors Paul Nivison, Dani Heron and James Young in a rehearsed reading of “embarrassing, funny, and totally entertaining” plays created by MA TV Fiction Writing students, alumni and staff on Monday, March 21.

Ms Duff said: “As a GCU Cultural Fellow I’m delighted to be once again collaborating with students. Bringing the plays to life for the first time will be an exciting experience for the students and actors. A rehearsed reading carries an energy which is entertaining for an audience. The subject of this year’s scripts has certainly ignited the students’ imagination and promises to be an entertaining event.”

Ann Marie Di Mambro, a lecturer on the programme and a playwright and TV script writer, has contributed a script. She said: “Awkward Dating is a great mix of embarrassing, funny, creepy, desperate, sad, cringe-worthy and totally entertaining moments captured brilliantly by students of GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing. The rehearsed readings of micro-plays has something for everyone.  It’s fantastic for the writers to see actors of this calibre showcase their work, actors enjoy working on brand-new material, and, maybe, discovering a new writing talent, and the audience will really enjoy it, too.”

Meet Cute, a short film developed from a play written by alumna Gemma Copping for last year’s showcase, and directed by James Young, will be screened at the event.

GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing is the only full-time postgraduate programme of its type in the UK and is supported by scholarships from Warner Brothers, BBC Scotland, Larkhall Films and MG Alba.

Awkward Dating is at 5pm in Campus Life Seminar Rooms one and two, George Moore building at GCU. Book tickets here
