TV writer and producer Phil Redmond to explore his career with students

TV writer and producer Phil Redmond

Phil Redmond, creator of Grange Hill, Brookside and Hollyoaks, is to share his experiences of shaping the TV landscape at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU).

Mr Redmond will talk to students and alumni of the University’s unique MA TV Fiction Writing programme, as well as to GCU staff and television industry figures, in A Conversation with Phil Redmond.

Mr Redmond said: “The outer edges of the British Isles, where the Celtic heartbeat can be heard the loudest, are synonymous with creativity, storytelling and cultural challenge, so it is important that we do all that we can to support, nurture and inspire wherever that heartbeat is heard. Media, content creation and social comment will become an integral part of a future digital world economy. Despite the acclaimed contributions to the varied and various stages of the world, we still do not invest enough in our young developing talent. We must. GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing programme is a great example of how industry and academe can come together. Long may it continue.”

Students of the programme regularly meet key industry figures to hear their insights into the industry, and the programme’s graduates have gone on to write for popular shows including EastEnders, Casualty, Holby City, River City, Doctors, Hollyoaks, and Eve.

Chris Dolan, a lecturer on the MA TV Fiction Writing programme, said: “Phil Redmond is a legend of contemporary television. We’re delighted that such a talented and influential writer is coming to GCU to share his experiences with our students. Our students have recently welcomed speakers such as Stuart Murphy, Mal Young, David Hayman and Ann Mitchell, and Phil will be an inspiration for us all.”

GCU’s MA TV Fiction Writing is the only full-time postgraduate programme of its type in the UK and is supported by scholarships from Warner Brothers, BBC Scotland, Larkhall Films, MG Alba.

A Conversation with Phil Redmond is at noon in GCU’s Campus Life Lounge on Friday March 18 and tickets are available here
