Aspiring writers hear from TV industry veteran

Honorary Professor Mal Young

Honorary Professor Mal Young visited MA TV Fiction Writing students on Wednesday, December 2.

The former BBC Head of Head of Drama, who is credited for championing the retun of the iconic Dr Who series and producing programmes such as EastEnders, Doctors and Holby City, met with students on the University’s flagship writing programme.

The television veteran shared his experiences of writing and producing in the UK and US and worked with the aspiring writers on a drama series, Infinite, which they are creating.

Mal Young said: “I get just as much out of working the students as they do. I am very proud of my involvement with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), especially working with creative students who are keen to learn.”

Mal Young is credited with steering Brookside through its heyday and was appointed an Honorary Professor by GCU in 2014.

MA TV Fiction writing lecturer and TV script writer Professor Ann Marie di Mambro said: “Our students were inspired by Mal Young’s visit. It is a fantastic opportunity for them to get to experience story development with one of the most highly regarded writers and producers within the industry on both sides of the Atlantic.”
