Malawian scholarship winners graduate from GCU

Grace Sukasuka has graduated from GCU with an MSc Quantity Surveying with distinction

Scholarship winners Grace Sukasuka and Sabron Kalyolyo have graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University’s (GCU) School of Engineering and Built Environment.

The Malawian students joined GCU last year on a unique scholarship scheme between the University and city housing association ng homes, which supported the students in their studies in MSc International Project Management and MSc Quantity Surveying.

The University and ng homes signed a unique five-year agreement with the High Commissioner of Malawi to support the scholarships. It was the first time a university and a UK housing association had teamed up to offer a sponsorship to Malawian students, who were selected from employees of the Malawi Government and Malawi Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi. They were awarded living expenses and accommodation with ng homes while they were studying at GCU.

Grace, who graduated with an MSc Quantity Surveying with distinction, said: “I have enjoyed everything about my time at GCU and I believe I gathered a great deal of knowledge and developed some vital skills.

“These skills will prove to be useful when I return to Malawi, where there is a huge skills gap, and I will be able to bring them to my workplace Malawi Polytechnic.

“I would like to thank GCU and ng homes for the scholarship opportunity.”

Dr Malawi Ngwira, Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Built Environment, said: “We were delighted to welcome Sabron and Grace to the University and I am incredibly impressed with what they’ve achieved. These outstanding students can now take back what they have learned at GCU to Malawi and help to build its future.”
