Student telethon raises money for the Caledonian Club

The funds raised will help to strengthen GCU's commitment to widening access through the Caledonian Club

Glasgow Caledonian University’s (GCU) annual student telethon has raised almost £45,000 for the University’s widening participation and community engagement initiative the Caledonian Club.

During the three-week campaign, student callers contacted almost 1500 alumni, updating them on University activities and asking them to donate to the award-winning initiative.

As well as raising funds, the campaign gave students the opportunity to hear first-hand about the experiences of GCU alumni and how the University has helped to shape their career. The students updated the graduates about GCU developments, asked for feedback on the University’s alumni activity, and let them know about the different ways to stay engaged with GCU.

First-year Diagnostic Imaging student Rachel Surgenor said: "I really enjoyed the telethon campaign and I found it incredibly interesting to talk to people about their time at GCU. This experience has really helped to build my interpersonal skills, which I can use throughout my studies and my work experience placements."

In line with the University’s commitment to the Common Good, the Caledonian Club works with schools, children and families in the community to raise educational aspirations in young people and their families, and build key life skills and confidence in pupils and student mentors.

GCU alumni and friends have so far raised more than £400,000 to support the initiative. Donations from this year’s telethon will be used to build on the current programme of activity and to grow the number of financial assistance scholarships that are available for school pupils who choose to study at GCU.

Jillian Watt, Director of Development at GCU, said: “We are extremely grateful to alumni and friends for their generous support, which has resulted in our most successful telethon campaign to date. The funds raised will make an immediate and important contribution to the lives of our students and will help to strengthen our commitment to widening access through the Caledonian Club. “The success of the campaign is a real testimony to the commitment and enthusiasm of our student callers, who connected with alumni and friends to share their experiences and provide an update of developments at GCU.”
