Unlike traditional University lectures (where the theoretical concepts and their implementation are often treated separately) our lectures include live implementation of technologies under discussion. This enhances learning because you can see real examples which will put theoretical concepts into practice – before you get into the lab. You can see us build networks and see how we diagnose and fix problems. Using the University Learning environment GCULearn, you can access lecture and class content whenever you need it.
The course has an intensive lab schedule, but don’t worry, we are there with you. We encourage you to ask questions so that we can sort out any practical issues there and then, or flag up theory questions for upcoming tutorials.
Tutorials are interactive, you are encouraged to ask questions and often answer them. There are no stupid questions – our objective is that you understand the topics at hand before we move on.
Employability and professionalism
An important feature of the programme is an emphasis on professionalism. We foster technical excellence, but we also know that soft skills, like presentation skills, team working and commercial awareness are essential to succeed in the kind of high profile roles where one of our graduates will be representing their company.
The assessments and case studies used in the Integrating Network Technologies module will put you in a range of situations typically faced by networking professionals. Throughout the programme we encourage your ability to present your own ideas, work with team members and customers. Over time, you will build the self-confidence needed to be a successful networking professional.
Our philosophy is to resolve questions at the earliest opportunity. Our presence in the labs allows us (or you!) to flag up any difficulties our students may be encountering. This allows us to highlight and deal with issues in weekly tutorials. The use of continuous assessment means we can give our students feedback at the time they can best use it, rather than waiting for the result of an end of term exam.
Our programme is designed to gradually and continuously build up your ability to design, implement and troubleshoot solutions to increasingly complex scenarios. We believe the breaks introduced by traditional written examination diets would interfere with this process. Accordingly, a mix of continuous assessment methods including design case studies, class based tests and hands-on skills tests are employed to assess the full range of learning outcomes in our programme.
