Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Learning from Incidents: An ESRC Seminar Series

Funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), this seminar series will critically evaluate and advance the theory, methodology, organisational practice and policy of learning from incidents in the workplace (LFI).  The seminars combine Adult and Organisational Learning, Sociology, Industrial Psychology, Human Factors Engineering and Ethnography, bringing together distinguished scholars and early-career researchers from the UK, Finland, Italy, and Spain. Seminar participants include practitioners and policy-makers from the energy, construction, transport and other sectors and professional and government bodies and third-sector organisations such as Energy Institute, British Safety Council, Health and Safety Executive.   

The series is comprised of six interdisciplinary seminars:

• Seminar 1: What is LFI? Mapping the problem space (Nov 2013 @ Glasgow Caledonian University)
• Seminar 2: Theorising LFI (June 2014 @ University of Aberdeen)
• Seminar 3: LFI Methodologies (Oct 2014 @ University of Southampton)
• Seminar 4: Practice and policy in LFI (Feb 2015 @ Energy Institute London)
• Seminar 5: Research-practice nexus in LFI (June 2015 @ British Safety Council London)
• Seminar 6: An interdisciplinary research agenda for LFI (Sep 2015 @ Glasgow Caledonian)

The seminar outcomes, including both scientific contributions and case studies from industry, will be published in a book. The seminars will stimulate the development of new theories, research methods, and organisational and behavioural change methodologies that can be applied to improve learning from incidents in the workplace.
