Personal Tutors Campaign

All students are assigned a Personal Tutor at the start of their course (if you are a continuing student, this is the new name for your Academic Advisor). All Undergraduate and Taught Postgraduate students will have a named Personal Tutor who is a member of academic staff from your department, and who has knowledge of your programme. For postgraduate research students, the role is undertaken by your research supervisor, coordinated by the Graduate School and a network of departmental postgraduate research tutors.

Personal Tutoring is not just about giving you the opportunity to talk if you have a problem; it is intended to help you reflect on your progress and develop personal, academic and professional skills. You should meet with your Personal Tutor two to three times a year to discuss your academic studies, co-curricular activities that enhance your profile, and to reflect on any issues that may impact on your overall performance at university. Personal Tutoring meetings will help you to develop skills that can improve your academic performance and make you aware of areas for professional and personal growth and development. Personal Tutors can help you navigate through assessment feedback and can work with you to produce academic development plans which can help improve your record of academic attainment. In addition, these meetings can provide an opportunity to discuss career planning and employability.

Personal Tutoring meetings may take different formats (face to face, telephone, skype) and may sometimes be organised as group sessions (for example during induction week and at the beginning of subsequent years).

The role of the Student (Personal Tutee)

In your role as a Personal Tutee you are expected to:

  1. Attend and participate actively in meetings with your Personal Tutor (this is a University requirement and attendance will be recorded). Contact your Personal Tutor if you cannot attend any meeting.
  2. Prepare for all meetings, completing any required forms ahead of one-to-one meetings, and bring along any necessary paperwork.
  3. Implement all agreed post-meeting action points in a timely manner.
  4. Inform your Personal Tutor of any personal circumstances that you feel are affecting your studies in order that effective support may be offered.
  5. Inform and seek advice from your Personal Tutor if you need to access the University’s Mitigating Circumstances processes.
  6. Keep a record of activities and reflect on your progress, performance and longer-term aspirations associated with these activities.
The Personal Tutoring Meeting Record

For some meetings, you may wish to complete (with your Personal Tutor), a Personal Tutoring Meeting Record . The form provides a record of the meeting, highlighting any actions that emerge from it.
